Canada’s
Lamaze Wins Jumping Gold
HONG
KONG (AP)—Eric Lamaze of Canada rode Hickstead
to the individual gold medal in Olympic equestrian
jumping on Thursday, winning a timed jump-off
over Rolf-Goran Bengtsson of Sweden, who took
silver on Ninja.
U.S.
rider Beezie Madden, riding Authentic, beat six
other riders in another timed jump-off for the
bronze.
Earlier
in the week, the U.S. team won gold in team jumping
and Canada won the silver.
“It’s
our week,” said Lamaze. “This makes
the team medal all the sweeter. It’s going
to take awhile for the moment to sink in.”
In
the first of the two main rounds, 10 riders had
clean rides, but Lamaze and Bengtsson were the
only riders to finish both rounds without a fault.
That set up the jump-off to decide the gold medalist.
